Welcome to UTB Fall 2004

Welcome Back Scorpions,
My name is Michael C. Camarillo, President of The Student Government Association and I would like to welcome each and everyone back for another year at UTB/TSC. This year, like no other year, is a very special one due to the growth of the student population and the growth of the campus. Our institution is a premier university in south Texas and we continue to raise the standard in student enrollment, degree plans, and graduation. Through this growth will come the growing pains of higher tuition, not enough degree plans or facilities and of lack of financial assistance. With the passage of the Wellness Recreational Fitness Complex and the community calling for a $68 million Bond package the university does not seize to stop working for higher education in our community. We have a large student population that must work to make ends meet while obtaining higher education. UTB/TSC is focused on helping students succeed with different program initiatives. For example part of the tuition increase goes to hire students to work on campus and make above minimum wage. They will take more hours to meet their graduation requirements and still work to help their families. Today we face the reality of a changing economy, terrorist attacks, and higher gas prices, yet we stand firm that we must graduate in four years and help all others to make this sacrifice for our community and families. Receiving an education today is difficult but not impossible. I realize mothers must leave there children to a child care provider or ask a relative to take care of there children, and many students take on two or more jobs just to survive. Do you dare to take out another student loan. Although college life can and is a challenging experience, and sometimes it seems to be more pain then good, I can tell you that I will be their to find solutions for our problems and to help administration find ways to improve college life for all students. My mission is to hear from many of you, express your concerns and do the necessary work to improve student life on campus. I encourage all students to remain strong and vigilant and to continue to strive towards your goal of graduation. You are not alone on this journey and rest assured I am fighting to make the trip easier for all of us. Before you know it, you will graduate and those issues you once had will be a distant memory. I wish each of you a great semester and the best of luck. STING’EM HARD!
